Having a proper dental health care plan is more than just brushing and flossing daily.  It is more than simply staying away from the candy bars and soda.  To keep your mouth and teeth healthy for your lifetime, there are seven easy steps that you can follow to ensure a good dental health care plan for yourself.

Understanding Your Own Oral Health Needs

Having a family dentist, and talking to them regularly should be a requirement of your personal dental health care plan.  Discussing any special oral conditions and any effects of medical or health conditions which may impact oral health is a good idea.  Some examples of special situations are:
Cancer treatments
Pregnancy
Heart diseases
Diabetes
Dental appliances such as dentures or braces

Any of these situations may require a change in your overall dental health care plan.  Inform your dentist if the following occur:
Changes in your general health
You start or change medications

Developing And Following A Daily Dental Health Routine

Based on decisions made between you and your dentist, and considerations for your general health and oral situations, developing a dental health care plan which is easy to follow is possible to accomplish.  If you have special circumstances such as pregnancy, diabetes or other situations you should understand the additional care and treatment required of your teeth.  You need to commit to the extra tasks suggested and work them into your daily health care plan.

Use Fluoride For Dental Health Care

Everyone benefits from fluoride use.  Daily fluoride use strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay in both children and adults.  Three items you can use to get fluoride:
Toothpaste
Mouth rinses
Tap water

Check with your dentist to see if a higher strength or prescription only fluoride is needed for your oral requirements.

Brushing And Flossing Daily

While brushing after every meal or snack is the ideal situation, it is not always the most convenient.  Brushing your teeth at least twice daily, along with a once daily flossing, should be part of your daily dental health care plan.  This helps to eliminate plaque and other causes of gingivitis and related diseases.

Proper Nutrition

Eating a variety of foods is good for a general healthy diet.  To work a plan of dental health care into your diet, limit sugars and starchy intake.  The acids from these foods are what start the decay process.

Self-Examination

Get to know the appearance of your mouth and gums.  This is done with daily examinations as part of your daily dental health care plan.  This way you can catch any changes or early warning signs which can be checked by a dentist.  Look for the following problems:
Development of abnormalities – spots, cuts, lesions
Swelling or growth – tongue, cheeks, inside the lips, gums, and the floor and roof of the mouth
Tooth problems – chipping, cracking, discoloration, looseness
Sudden changes – the way you bite, pain, sourness or stiffness in the mouth

Consult a dentist immediately if you develop sudden or severe pain or if pain or swelling persists over time.

Visit The Dentist Regularly

The recommended standard is a twice yearly visit for check-ups and cleanings.  Discuss the frequency with your dentist to best suit this to your dental health care plan.
